The City of Liverpool is extremely proud of it's elite high achievers. Folowing a fantastic showing in the 2002 Commonwealth games in Manchester the Elite Sports Scholarship Scheme was devised. This enables athletes who are genuine contenders for selection for the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships, to apply for City Council Jobs. These posts contain an inbuilt flexibility for athletes to continue training, working their schedules around duties.

The City is fully supporting it's elite pereformers and it is paying dividends. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne the city provided thirteen  athletes from a variety of sports and they returned with eight medals.
