Handball has been described as 'water polo without the water, football played with the hands with a littler bit of rugby thrown in'. One thing is clear, if you've never seen or played handball, you're missing out!
The game mixes high-speed action, sleight of hand, agility and tremendous power with spectacular shots at goal and plenty of physical confrontation. Matches last an hour and handball players need to be all-round athletes to compete- strength, power, agility and good aerobic fitness are essential.
This would go some way to explaining why handball is one of the most popular team sports across the world for women and men, spectators and players alike.
The sport's elite play professionally, mainly in Europe, and the ultimate objective for any player is to compete in the Olympic Games. Liverpool Handball Club runs a number of junior handball sessions in the city.
